Building pride through opportunities

Congratulations to all graduates of the Certificate III in Disability program run through New South Wales Ageing, Disability and Home Care (ADHC).  These newly recruited Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Residential Support Workers (RSWs) have begun careers in a challenging and rewarding field.  All groups were able to celebrate last month with a series of graduation ceremonies across the state (Wagga Wagga group pictured).

The Aboriginal Residential Support Worker Employment and Training Program is part of a commitment  ADHC has made to empowering Aboriginal people and their communities through employment and training. It is one of a number of employment initiatives developed through the ADHC Building Pride through Opportunities Aboriginal Employment and Capabilities Framework.

BCA National participants consistently commented on how their accredited training had helped their confidence at work and, as with all vocational training, how experiences at work assisted to highlight the theories they would be learning in class. One participant said of his training, ‘everything is relative and reinforced when I work in the group homes’. Another appreciated that ‘the modules were explained in layman’s terms which made it easy to understand’.

BCA National would like to congratulate all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Residential Support Workers who took part in the courses, and thank ADHC for allowing us to contribute to a remarkable an empowering program.
